JustSo Titler utility

"Got Title?"

Discontinued. This page is online only as Help to current users.

Who among us has not been embarrassed to get that call from a client: "Hey, how come lots of our webpages are named 'Untitled Document'" or just as bad, is titled with the page's abstruse filename? Well, this Extension is here to save you from such ignominy. When a document is Saved, JustSo Titler runs automatically, checking for the presence of a valid Title. If the Title tag is missing, blank, or contains that ugly term "Untitled," you are given a chance to add or edit it. There is also an option to replace the title with a default value which you may set for each Site or with the document's filename (without its extension.)

Once JustSo Titler is installed, it runs automatically whenever you Save your documents. It checks all documents containing a Head tag for the presence of a Title tag and a Title. If all is well, the Command's dialog (the User Interface, or UI) will be all but invisible - it blinks right off. However the UI will appear if:

  • the Title tag is missing or blank
  • the Title contains the string "untitled" (any case)
  • the Title had been set to the Site's Default title (see below), (unless you have checked the "Henceforth, omit this screen for Default Titled pages" box in which case the UI will not appear.)

You may also get to the UI at any time - even if would normally flash off during a document Save operation - by simply clicking the "JustSo Titler" item on the Commands / valleywebdesigns.com menu.

The User Interface

Page Title:
When the UI opens, this will display the current page Title, if any. In this text box you may edit this text string, or even remove it. Tip: by setting this string to "*" (without the quotes) or to "pagename" (again without the quotes), the document's Title will be changed to the page's filename without its extension.
Save as Site's New Default Title:
This option will save whatever title is in the above Page Title box as the Default page Title for this Site. It will appear in the following text box, below, the next time the UI is called. If the Page Title is "*" or "pagename" then the Default Title for the Site will be "pagename," meaning it will use the document's filename (without extension) as the site's Default page Title.
Replace with
Default Title:
This option will change the document's current Page Title to the string in the Default Title box. Note: to edit the Default Title you edit not this text box but the "Page Title" box above and then the "Save as Site's New Default Title" option.
Erase Title for
the Document:
Simply a shorthand way to erase the page's Title, which could also be accomplished by removing the entry from the "Page Title" box above. Avoids accidentally leaving a fragment of the Title intact when trying manually erase a very long Title in its entirety.
Henceforth, omit this screen for Default Titled pages:
With this option checked, the next time any document is Saved, the Command will not appear if its Title is equal to the current Default Title. The next time the UI does appear you must recheck this box to continue hiding such documents. Tip: If you later decide that you want the UI to appear so you can change document Titles, then you may use the "Commands/Valleywebdesigns.com/JustSo Titler" menu item to open the UI, and then click the UI's OK button without rechecking the "Henceforth..." button.
OK:
Click this to save your work, to perform the actual edits to the Title, to save any Defaults for the site and finally to save the current status of the "Henceforth" checkbox. Note too that if the document's Title Tag is missing entirely, even if you enter nothing in any of the fields and select none of the options, when you click OK button, a blank Title tag is added to the page (and of course the "Henceforth" status is saved as well.) The command presumes you are choosing to enter a blank Title. Choose Cancel if you do not wish to add a blank Title tag or record the Henceforth status.

That's all there is to it!
